Word Wall!

I am SO excited about this:preview file programmable word wall

Last year, I sorted my sight words into sets of 10 based on the order of introduction.  Each child started out with 10 red words  {you could really start with whatever color you want, it was just easier for me to do it in rainbow order!} when they learned those words, they got the next set of 10 and added them to their word ring at home and at school.  I decided that I wanted my word wall to correspond with the colors of the cards…so for the past several weeks, I have been working on this pack. But, here’s the BEST part….you can add your own words too! AND you don’t have to handwrite them OR print out labels!  You can type directly onto the PDF and print them out yourself.  Yay!!

The kids loved adding the new cards to their word rings, and it really helped me know who knew what words.  A quick glance at their sight word rings showed me how many words they knew.  I assessed them every week (I promise it only takes a few minutes!) so each child was learning the words at his or her own pace.

This year, I am going to kick it up a notch and give them another visual incentive – in the form of an ice cream cone!

FINAL WORD WALL PACKET_Page_04

At the end of the year we will have an ice cream party to celebrate all of their hard work of learning their sight words! HOW FUN?!!

I also included in this pack a few different alphabet cards for your word wall.  I think it’s super important (especially in K) to have a picture cue for each letter as well as a properly formed letter.  I LOVE my fancy fonts, but for our littlest kiddos, they need to be simple – especially for the word wall.

  6. Do you make a set of color coded cards for each student to take home and study? I was just concerned with the printing aspect. I would love to do this, I love all your unit.

    1. Yes, I do. I think it's important for parents to have that connection to school. The kiddos learn them much faster when parents can support at home. We have a print shop in our district, so the printing is not a problem. The cutting takes some time though! That's when it helps to have parent volunteers!!

  9. I love this idea! I have taught kindergarten for 10 years, and I've gotten so many fun, great new ideas from your blog and TPT. I'm just wondering how you introduce the words? I usually teach 2 sight words a week. How many words do you introduce at a time? Do you wait until you have introduced the first 10 words in class to put them on the students' rings? Thank you for sharing! :-)

    1. Hi Dana -- I introduce 2 a week as well. I send home a words of the week page that they write the words on. I have 2 little white boards at the front of the classroom that I put the words on with magnetic letters so they can look at it each week. I add the words to the word wall as I teach them - the kids help show me where they go, but I send each color as they learn them. So they all start with 10 red words on their ring. Some might learn them really fast and be ready for orange right away. For others, it may take longer. But, when I start on the next 10, I'll send that set of cards home even if they haven't learned the other ones. The ring at school stays with what they are working on. It is my HOPE that parents will figure out that they have to work a bit harder with their kiddo on the word. Does that make sense?

  13. I thought I commented on this but who knows! This is very cute! I love the ice cream theme with the scoops. We do something similar called RAINBOW words. We have red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. As they know all of one color they can move on the class rainbow and color in their mini rainbow. I am doing a guest post on Kindergarten Smiles about it one the 30th and had just sent my packet for her to preview the other night.
I am curious how you made a PDF but allowed them to still type in it. I had a few blank ones in my packet but told them they would have to write it with a sharpie!

  14. Hi! I purchased this unit and I love it. I was wondering what list you got your words from? I'm going to be a K and 1 reading teacher and I want to add more words to this set without repeating words. I know there is the dolch list, fry's list, or a publisher's list. But it is taking me forever to try and figure out where you got your 100 word list from. Help!
    Thanks so much,
    Andi
