Gobble! Gobble! It’s Turkey Time!

Oh! It’s turkey time already! This year has sure flown by for me!   I have a couple of fun things that I’m planning for our short week next week and thought I would share them with you!

I don’t usually do word study during a short week, but I will focus on a sight word review.  I plan on playing this fun game that was a tried and true favorite in Kindergarten!  You can download it in my TpT store if you’re interested.  I wish I could put all the words in the world on the cards, but I just don’t have time! I’ve included a blank set if you want to hand write your words on it.

I’ve made up some basic comprehension questions to go along with them for our readers notebooks.  You can download them if you think you can use them.

  

Here is another game that we played in Kindergarten.  I’ll play it again this year, but the children will draw 2 cards and add them together.

And finally, another fun spelling game that my first graders LOVE to play! I love that they love playing it because they get practice both reading AND writing their words! I normally use this game for their word study words, but next week, I will use it for a sight word review.

Sight Word Fun! Christmas in July!

Today marks the LAST day of my Christmas in July sale!  I have discounted all of my sight word units.  These are some of my favorite units, and some that I use ALL the time!

Let’s start with Sticky Sight Words:

Next up is my handwriting packet.  We work through this packet quite slowly, and in Kindergarten, I generally start it in January.  Next year in first grade, I’ll start it at the beginning of the year. We practice correct letter formation in isolation and then combine all the letters and practice them in a sentence.  Why is this a sight word pack too? Because I ask the children to read the sentence and draw a picture!

My fix it up sentences, are one of my very first products, and continue to be a best seller because of their simple, practical, daily practice. The children LOVE them, and their favorite part is having a friend check their work!

I usually start the above back towards the spring in Kindergarten, and I wanted something for the beginning of the year, so I created Fix It up Again!   Same concepts as the first pack, but this one has a bit more of a focus on sight words.

My family are I are enjoying a fun weekend in NYC this weekend!  We’ve explored the Time Square area, saw Wicked and are heading to a soccer game today.  It’s been a fun weekend!  Hope you have a fantastic weekend!

Morning Baskets and Sight Words

It’s been a whirlwind these past few weeks! We had our first big dance competition this weekend, and I also had report cards due, so life was a bit…crazy!

I thought I would share with you what’s been in my  morning baskets lately.

The children complete the activities in these baskets after they finish their morning jobs.  We will only work in them for about 10-15 minutes, so the activities are quick and highly engaging!

I pulled out a lot of Lakeshore activities that I had on my shelves this time…

While the children are working in their morning baskets, I am finishing up reminding kids to make lunch choices, children are bringing library books down, I am entering attendance/lunch choices, etc.  We will work with the activities for about 10-15 minutes – some children work longer if they complete their morning jobs quickly.  We go straight into our daily calendar right after morning baskets!

I also wanted to share with you how I am tracking our sight words this year! 

Last year, each child had individual ice cream scoops like these

As they mastered each set of 10 words, they got another set of a different color and added a scoop to their ice cream cone.  They LOVED watching their ice cream scoops grow!

Because I have a larger class, I decided I wanted to do a big giant scoop!  The scoop that is in my room now has pictures of each child on the scoop that designates which set of cards they are working on.  As they master a set of cards, they move their picture up one scoop!  The children LOVE it!  They are so excited to learn their sight words!

Working on our Sight Words!

In case you missed it at the end of last week, I posted a new little diddy.  This is something that I started working on almost a year and a half ago, and then started revamping this summer.  I FINALLY finished it!

I am in love with these activities! They are simple enough to do on a regular basis (for morning work, maybe?!), but still fun and engaging for kids!

What else do we do to review sight words?

One of my most popular posts EVER is {this one} where I shared this great sight word chants.

My kids LOVE this chants!  I keep them close by to use for little time fillers and brain breaks!

I also LOVE to use the Heidi Song’s sight word DVD’s – these are also great for a little brain break!  Anytime we can put anything to music, it’s a hit!

Another favorite are our sight word poems.  These poems have been around forever, but the kids do seem to love them!

Of course, we are always practicing sight words during our literacy centers!

We read and chant our word wall…

We practice with our daily fix-its {here} (for the end of Kindergarten) and {here} (for the beginning)

We practice during our daily news…

We practice when we come into the classroom…

We practice when we leave the room…

We build our ice cream cones when we learn each new set of sight words…

We play lots of whole class games…

We build our words with magnetic letters, and mix them up and fix them throughout the day….

Sometimes we even stamp them on our hands!

We have secret, whisper words….

And so….so…..so….many more fun and engaging ways!
