Loving to Write!

Writing time has always been one of my favorite times of the day in Kindergarten.  It is SO much work and management at the beginning of the year, but the end of the year is SO worth it.  I love, love, love the writing that they can do by the end of the year.  I am SO proud of them.

I started reading this book this year:

imageI am only a few chapters into it – life got in the way, but I love what I’ve read so far.  You should check it out if you’re looking for a book to read this summer!

I’ve used a variety of formats this year for writing, I started with papers in binders, and moved towards papers in folders, and then finally to little books.  My kiddos were loving the little books, but I felt like I needed to move forward – their writing was getting a bit messy, and I felt like they needed more structure.

Here is what I came up with:

IMG_3267 IMG_3268

One of the ideas in the book was to create a page like the one on the right so the children can color in a box when they finished a page.  When they start writing, they can open up their journal, look at the “What page am I working on” page and go directly to that number.

I made books with about 25 pages in it. I figured that would be enough even for my most voracious writers. So far so good!

Here are some writing samples from some of my kiddos.

IMG_3269

“My dad is taking me to his work. We are checking places".”

IMG_3270

“Aidan and Easton are playing star wars when we play star wars we are gonna fight.”

 IMG_3271

“I like to grow flowers and I like to go to the park.  After April its my birthday”

 IMG_3272

“I love my mama. I love my mom because I kiss her and my dad tries to kill the fly.”

     IMG_3277

“Karishma was at my house playing go fish.”

 IMG_3278

“Football is so fun because football is fun to watch.”

 IMG_3279 IMG_3280

“The three little bears have a house. Goldilocks and her mom.”

-Not sure what she was trying to say here!-

“She sees a house. She goes into the house and she eats the food.”

IMG_3281 IMG_3282

“The bears come to the house. The bears see Goldilocks. They are very mad!”

“Goldilocks was scared. The end.”

{Look at the bears’ angry faces! Priceless!}

I try to start each writing session with a quick mini-lesson or book.  Sometimes the mini-lessons are planned in advance, sometimes they are made up on the spot based on what I see many children doing.  (or even just a few!).

I try to dedicate at least 30 minutes to writing every day. At the beginning of the year, we may not write for 30 minutes, but we do write every single day. (or draw!)

We don’t share every day, but I try to get some sharing in at least once a week.  We all sit in a circle and share our favorite piece.  The children love to look back at all of the stories and share them.

I am always amazed when I look back at their pieces from the beginning of the year and compare them to what they are doing now.  The kids are so excited to see those too!

I would love to hear how you support writing in your classrooms!

P.S. Did I mention how proud I am of these kiddos?!

I really like your writing journal page with the boxes at the bottom so kids have to check them when they are done writing. Over time, I would think they would do it automatically. Your little ones are on their way to becoming great writers!!!

I love, love, love the checklist at the bottom. My team and I always struggle with how to keep it altogether during our Writer's Workshop block. This would be perfect.

Curious - Do you scaffold what's at the bottom - or just keep it all on there since you've been building up to the journal?

Thanks for sharing this great post!

I read that book at the beginning of last school year. Changed the way I taught writing to my Kinders! I love how it presents oral storytelling and hits on the importance of this skill. At the beginning of the year, I spend time every day letting one child tell an oral story (after I model for a few days)and then we all discuss what we would draw if we were to draw the story the child told. It always amazes me how it really helps them begin to visualize what drawing a story looks like and the details that emerges. We then move into drawing stories, and then a few weeks later I begin to add words in my modeling. So happy to see prominent bloggers sharing how wonderful this book is for primary teachers. :)

I love the pages you use for your writing. I model my writing time off of Kidwriting by Eileen Feldgus.
I have stapled blank pages together to make a book for each child. I think it was in that book that she recommended using the pages "sideways" (so that the pages are flatter than they are tall). My colleague and I have discussed adding lines for their writing, but never have. We just have them write their words on the back of the page to the left side of their drawing. I really like the idea of a checklist though, for them to start to monitor their own writing, I would like to add that in next year. I also love to look back through the journals to see the progress that they have made. It warms my heart. Each day when my students do write in their "kidwriting journals" I sit with them to assist in their writing portion, and after they write, we conference and I make some notes in their journal as to how well they are doing, or what areas they can improve. Keeping the notes in the journal allows me to keep my observations organized. :) Thanks for the tips!

I love seeing how far my little writers have come since the first of the year, as well! I have some whose handwriting and spelling is completely transformed by May. We write every day during our Reading rotations. In the fall we work mostly with pictures and copying short sentences off the board. Later, we move on to open ended sentences, and finally they are writing on their own. I love the boxes at the bottom - holds them accountable for their writing! :)

i love using picture books as springboards for writing activities. Some of my favorites include: "Not a Box" (cannot think of author) "Not a Line" (by the same author), and the Library Mouse books- they really hit home the idea that they are writers!!

Thanks for taking the time to post the pictures. It's great to see the writings and pictures by your students. You can be very proud of them!
I do hop eyou ar able to post the pages. Having the check off at the bottom is very helpful. I use the "Kid writin" format and we use blank pages.
Do you use the same lined paper throughout the year or do you change it? Starting off in the beginning of the year is very hard for my k-kids to get started when there are lines. Any suggestions would be helpful!
Thanks so much!
