Daily Focus Wall

Last year our school district adopted the Marzano Teacher Evaluation model.  We are adding domains to be observed on each year. We are taking it slow so that teachers will really understand what they are being observed on.

Soon, we will need to begin posting our student learning goals.  I wanted to give it a go this year.  I originally planned on using these dry erase boards to write I can statements with the kiddos each day.

But then I thought – what good is it for my kiddos if they can’t actually READ what their goals are.  I decided to ditch the dry erase boards and make my daily focus wall more of a giant anchor chart for the kids.

I already had the banner made, and even though I use my interactive white board for my calendar, I still need to have a calendar on my wall for the kids (and me) to see.  I just re-arranged some things and moved my daily schedule to the board right next to this one.

This board is right next to my teaching area, so we look at it every single morning.  We talk about what our target goals are for the day, the vocabulary we are learning, the numbers/shapes/letters we are focusing on, and read our sight words every day.

The children refer to the board all day long! I’m so happy with it! As the year progresses, I am going to add more I can statements.

So, here is the breakdown….

  2. Hi Kathleen,
I live in Florida and this is our 3rd year using Marzano. I am a kindergarten teacher as well and for my classroom we use "we will be able to" so similar to I can. Our district requires us to write the words but we can have pictures next to it as well. So what I do is read the learning goal before starting the lesson and then use my learning scale. My learning scale consists of a thumbs up- I understand and can do it by myself, thumb side ways- I kind of get it but need more help and thumbs down- I do not understand. My learning goal has a pictures of thumbs up, side ways, down with this all written next to it. The learning scale is good because students are able to evaluate themselves and tell you where they are and it's good for teachers because you get to see where they are and if they need more practice or are able to move on. I use the learning scale throughout my lesson- beg, middle, end referring back to the learning goal. Anyways, this works for me. Just thought I would share. Thank you for sharing your focus wall headers and all your creative ideas. I always enjoy coming to visit your blog :)

  13. Could you do a header for "color?" I could use your blank ones to do one, but I really want it to match the others. This is such a cute set; I cannot wait to use it this coming year. Thank you!

  24. This is great! It has really encouraged me to be more intentional about explicitly teaching Learning intentions. I have started creating weekly learning goals for each subject. The display has really kept the students focused and intentional in their learning.
