New Years Resolutions! Techno Style!

I’m teaming up with some of my bloggy BFFs for a super fun linky and giveaway series!  This is a LONG post, but there is a special surprise when you get to the end…

(Thanks Amy Lemons for the great graphic!)

First, I’ll share with your some of the ways that I use technology in my classroom.  I’m pretty lucky to work in a district that really emphasizes the use of technology with kids!
Here is what I use on a daily basis:
Promethean IWB
If you have one in your room, you are lucky.  Just be sure you are not using it as a “glorified” overhead projector!  There is so much you can do with your IWB.  I use it on a daily basis for calendar time, literacy and math centers, and daily activities (math and language).  It does take TIME to make things interactive and useable for your kiddos, but they LOVE it.  I take a lot of my centers and import the PDF to a flipchart and use the camera tool to make them interactive.
image  image  image
If you have an IWB and are looking for some activities to do on it and are not quite ready to build your own flipcharts, try out the Lakeshore activities for your IWB.
Patterning Adventures Interactive Activities Word Building Fun Factory Interactive Game
These fun games are super easy to pop into your computer and use as a time – filler, a whole lesson, or as a math or literacy center. My kids have enjoyed using both, and I can’t wait to get my hands on more. There are many Lakeshore games available for the ipad too! I love all Lakeshore products and these certainly don’t disappoint! The colors and graphics are fun and engaging for kids. It’s super easy for kids to work on independently – they are such naturals with technology!
Psst…keep reading for a chance to win some of these awesome software titles!
Ipads:
imageI was lucky enough to receive a grant to have 5 ipads in my classroom! Yeah!  So far, we have been using them during centers and for whole group lessons.
Some that we have used are:
There are things that your kids will never love: a long car trip, a neverending flight, a boring dinner at the restaurant... With magnetic alphabet this won't be a problem anymore!
Magnetic letters.  The free version only has uppercase.  We’ve use this for word building and other word work in small and large group.  (I hook my ipad up to my IWB.)
LetterSchool allows you to choose a specific type of handwriting style (Handwriting Without Tears) . It has wonderful animations! Try the free Lite version.
Letter School.  I LOVE this app, and the kids do too.  I purchased the full version for my daughter and she loves it too!  It teach the correct path of motion in a super fun way!
image
This app is called Monster Squeeze.  It goes with our Every Day Math Curriculum.  The children love it! It’s not a free app, but EDM often has if for free during the NCTM conference in the fall.
image
This is a free app you can use to practice sight words.  There is also one with a blue background.  You can’t choose the words, but the children still enjoy it.
These are just a few off the top of my head, but I will blog more about the apps we are using at another time!
iTunes and iPod:
If you’re like me, you have TONS of CDs, and probably can’t remember all the songs that you have! I store all of my CDs on my school computer. I upload them into iTunes and create playlists.  I have an iPod and dock that I keep at school and keep my songs on there.  BUT, most often, I just search for the song that I want on my iTunes on my computer. This is the absolute EASIEST way to store music.  I don’t have to fumble with CDs anymore!
I’ll also create a page on my calendar flipchart for each month with my morning opening songs.  I call this my monthly “jukebox.”  I add a cute clipart and link the song to the clipart.  I just click on the song and it’s ready to go!
I will do this with YouTube videos as well – except I take a screen shot of the video, and then I link to it from the flipchart. I wish I could show you a picture of these two flipchart pages, but I don’t have my school computer with me!
Fitness and Technology:
Yes, sometimes it IS too cold to go outside in ND.  Usually when the windchill is below 0 we will stay inside.  One of the activities that my kiddos LOVE doing is Adventure to Fitness.
image
Adventure to Fitness is a 30 minute interactive workout.  The kids LOVE it, and I love that they still can get up and move around during our inside recess.  HIGHLY recommended by my kinders!
Listening Center:
image
This is another center that I have weekly.  Generally the children share the book, but this time I had multiple copies.  After they have finished listening, they will respond to a prompt that I have provided for them in their yellow books that you see in the picture.
MP3 Players:
One of my goals for the remainder of the year is to incorporate these little guys:

I have 4 of these that I received from a grant.  I hope to be able to upload a variety of books that the children can listen to after they finish their literacy centers.

I also have these:
Listen & Learn Letter Sounds Activity Program Listen & Learn Phonemic Awareness Activity Program
and I have a math one, but can’t seem to find it on Lakeshore’s site.  I want to use my mp3 players with these for independent work too.
Phew, I could go ON and ON about technology.  What are your favorites for technology?  What are your resolutions?  Post with a comment below!

    What a great question!
I vow to use my computer center more with some great activities on them. I also must start to use my iPads more in the new year!

  4. I use my Smartboard for calendar, videos, brain breaks, whole group lessons, everything! My kids love to listen to stories on Bookflix (subscription required) and the free Storyline Online. We also have several Lakeshore games they use for centers! They love them so much they often ask to play with them during inside recess. I have to say their favorite thing is youtube videos for brain breaks where they can sing and dance. I have a pinterest board called Kindergarten Videos where I keep all the videos I like. It makes for easy access and is safer than just opening up up Youtube where you may get questionable content.

  5. I'd like to use my one iPad more effectively with my students throughout the day. Currently, it is used during Daily 5 but I want to use it for Math Work Stations as well. I'd also like to continue to create QR codes for my students. They love them.

    1. I was hesitant in the beginning to use my IWB for centers. We have district issued laptops that we use to connect with, and I always bring mine home. I always fear that I am sick and the kids won't have that center. BUT, I realized that there are always 2nd choices the kids could do instead of that center! It's only for 1 day! :) Now that I'm on vacation, I'll miss the first 2 days back at school, so I just left my laptop there for the sub!

  9. I do not have an IWB but I do use my elmo all of the time. I resolve to incorporate more video and music into my day. I like the idea of putting everything on the computer to make it easier. Not sure I will get to that resolution before summer though! Thanks for always sharing your ideas. Happy 2013!

    1. Have someone make one for you! Just make sure that it is deep enough -- 4 feet is probably best. I have one that's only about a foot deep, and it really isn't big enough. I friend has one that is more like a platform and it's so much better! I don't use my stool anymore. MOST times they can reach things. I build flipcharts with that in mind!

  13. I have a Smart Board that my kids use everyday. One of my goals has always been to be sure that the kids are using it (otherwise, as you said, it is just a glorified overhead). My goal now is for the kids to use it as an independent station. I haven't ever been able to figure out the management of this because they get really loud. I will have to try though!

I finally got a document camera and projector and thought I was in heaven! I am going to learn how to use it more in my lessons and venture off to the smartboard room and see what I can accomplish there. 87. I started using my IWB as a literacy center after reading your BLOG and my kids love it. I need to come up with more activities for them but as you mentioned, it does take TIME to make interactive flipcharts. I will check out Lakeshore products. Tammy

  88. My resolution is to make better use of my IWB. You are so lucky to have a Promethian. Mine is Interwrite and although I know I'm blessed to have a board, it is very difficult to create interactive activities with. The software is very limited.

  100. Well, this is the third time I’ve written this comment, so maybe I need to make learning how to complete a comment as one of my resolutions! Seriously, I want to be able to use MORE of the technology available to me in the second half of the year—most specifically, sign up to try the smart table we have and the I-pads we now have available. It is a challenge to figure out how to implement these tools in a way that the kids (AND their teacher) are comfortable enough to use them semi-independently. The second of my resolutions is really to try using technology to ‘publish’ some of the writing students do, whether it is typing it into a children’s word processing program, or creating a slide show or
movie to highlight a class retelling. Wish me luck!

Thank you for a great blog, Kathleen---and a very thought-provoking post!

  107. Wow- I'm super impressed with all your technology. I use a Smartboard- but definitely NOT to its full potential. I use a wireless doc cam which I really love! I project just about everything we're doing onto my Smartboard. We go to the computer lab weekly & I always make sure my kids spend time learning computer skills on a program our district subscribes to- Learning.com. I have much to learn about technology in 2013! 108. I love all of your ideas! I am lucky enough to have a projector, document camera, SMARTboard, wireless slate (which I recommend for every class...or finding a way to use the iPad wirelessly as a slate), clickers (which I also highly recommend. It makes it so easy to assess and reteach right there on the spot!), iPad (favorite app for literacy/math centers...Futaba!! I used this app because up to 4 kiddos can use it on 1 iPad! I also use Lakeshore apps, Storia, Spelling City, and Teach Me frequently). I love Lakeshore IWB on SMARTboard! I love Adventure Fitness! I love listening center (I have a cd player, Tumblebooks, or Leap Frog).
My goal is to possibly start my own blog & start creating products for the classrooms. I'd also like to figure out how to project the iPad on my whiteboard!?!? :)

  112. I have had a student that really struggles w/ "letting" go of the technology time w/in the classroom when I can check out the ipad cart / ipod cart so I have not pushed the issue, however that then means that the rest of my students dont get access to those "tools" either. :( In January, I have a plan to bring both carts in more often, which really shouldnt be hard b/c its been soooo limited already! Wish us LUCK!!

  114. My technology resolution is to incorporate iMovie into my classroom. I learned some great techniques at a technology conference, especially about how to make a movie trailer (so cool!). So now I need to bring that learning into my classroom. iMovie trailers can be great for getting the kids psyched to learn about a new unit and they can also be great for digitally retelling a story.
